Locomotive Le-Mans

Locomotive Le-Mans warm up

As you may know Richard is leading a team of our members to complete a 24 hour steam marathon to raise funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice in Boston Spa.  From mid day on 29th April a team of York Model Engineers intend to run one of our member’s locomotives for 24 hours non-stop round our 2/3 mile track at Dringhouses in York.

Our interests
We offer a warm welcome to anyone interested in model engineering. Our members are involved in every aspect of the hobby. We have a strong contingent who build and operate railway locomotives and rolling stock. Stationary and traction engines are well represented in various types and sizes. Several members construct internal combustion engines, and these range from the historic to the modern. We have an active number making clocks, and more specialised interests include aeroplanes and boats.

Examples of more unusual projects include a stone crusher, a telescope and a crane. An important benefit of membership is to learn about the workshop techniques and tooling which enable the pursuit of our different interests.

Society activities
There are club activities the whole year round – see our Calendar. We own an attractive wooded site off the Tadcaster Road in York, beside the East Coast Main Line. Our clubhouse has a well stocked library with books and magazines on model engineering. We run an active programme of evening meetings and social events such as the summer barbecue and firework night. We have locomotive running days on our raised level (2½”, 3½”, 5” gauge) and ground level (5”, 7¼” gauge) tracks, and on our extensive Garden Railway (32mm gauge). On most running days light refreshments are available in the clubhouse. Site maintenance and improvement projects are undertaken by our working groups on most Wednesdays. During the summer, we take our portable railway track to outside local events such as fairs and fêtes.

Prospective members
Our membership ranges from the absolute beginner to the award winner but we all have a fascination in model engineering and a willingness to share our enjoyment of the hobby. We encourage applications for membership from all, regardless of experience. If you are thinking of joining our Society, please contact our secretary.
